Taiji Quan: Paochui
It is assumed that in the second set of Chen style “Cannon shots” (paochui) the movements are rather complicated and energy-consuming because in this set the hard dominates the soft. Generally this set is learnt after the adept has already acquired the basic knowledge of Lao Jia (Laojia) form, i.e. knows how to perceive and feel qi energy.
The Old School masters used to say that “having practiced the first set for five years, devote the next five years to learning the cannon shots”. Taiji masters warned that superficial knowledge of Lao Jia and inability to understand the fundamental principles of Taiji-quan can make the adept perform Pao Chui form with just external, perhaps more impressive movements.
Studying this form is linked with understanding fa jing (fa jing) concept – explosive force or discharge force. Pao Chui sequence is generally performed very swiftly, in “exploding manner”. The whole form from the beginning to the end takes no more than four minutes.
Due to many energy movements such as jumps, hits, “sealing” and avoiding, Pao Chui is considered to be one of the most important methods of preparing and training for a real sparring.
Pao Chui sequence of Chen style Taiji-quan consists of 43 movements.
