Dao Yin

Dao yin (Dao Yin), Art of Internal Regulation of Energy, is an ancient Daoist teaching pertaining to the Complete Perfection tradition. It is directed at cultivation of the body, the energy and the consciousness. In 1973 excavations in the town of Mawangdu found a silk cloth with graphs of the positions of the practice. Historically, however, there are few versions related to the creation and development of Dao Yin, depending on the school or the master who interprets it.

The basic purpose of Dao Yin is to construct of the body, to restore the circulation of energy and to form the conditions that allow to feel the rhythm (breath) of the work of the five internal yin organs (heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, spleen). This helps the organs to assimilate and store qualitative refined energy, which helps to regulate the energy processes in the five solid (yin) organs as vessels, storing the vital force. According to Chinese medicine, the quality of circulation in these organs is responsible for the energy balance and our emotional balance and, as result, for health and longevity. In addition, Dao Yin leads to qualitative development of concentration and purification of energy for further transformations.

Dao Yin is art of mindfulness and internal growth, which the famous representative of medieval Chinese Daoism Ge Hong (284-363 B.C.), comments in the following way:

The one who has learned how to move the energy forward and return it backwards resembles a Dragon; he is capable of gathering the body as a Tiger, and dwell in serenity and quietude as a Mountain.
He acquires the breathing of the turtle, achieves internal
changes like a Swallow and twines his energy
similar to the Snake. He is capable of sustaining and capturing, defending and
saving the Yellow and the White in the Cave vessel.

Dao Yin> is considered as practice which prepares the human body and energy for alchemical work. The practice is specifically important for women, since it allows them to reach the state of internal unity, without which no further progress is possible. The reason for this is the different circulation of energy in women and men. This is why in many schools this practice is considered as absolutely necessary for women practitioners.

Dao Yin has two levels:


Level 1
Directed at understanding of the position of the body, the energy and control over its circulation. Consists of the following sequences:

  • Opening of the Lower Cinnabar Field
  • Primary Distillation
  • Opening of the Middle Cinnabar Field
  • Opening of the Upper Cinnabar Field
  • Connecting Water with Fire

  • Nurturing of the Lower Cinnabar Field
  • Gathering of Heavenly Essence
  • Nurturing of vitality with Heavenly Essence
  • Gathering of the Energetical Structure

Level 2
Directed at understanding of the fivefold connection of the body. Consists of the following sequences:
