Art of the Sacred Tortoise

The Art of the Sacred Tortoise is practice directed towards opening and proper construction of the spine.

Daoists view the spine as a facilitator for the development of human energetical structure. This, in turn, gives opportunity to use additional source of energy.

The spine determines the work of the whole body, connecting all of its systems and organs. In addition, the spine serves as energy channelling system of the body, which nurtures the whole skeleton. The wok of the Minor cosmic orbit, which is responsible for the energy circulation in the body, also depends on the spine.

A person’s life is reflected in the state of his physical body and it depends on the condition of the spine.

The physiochemical processes of the body are, to a large extend, connected to the functioning of the spine, which can either strengthen the body or devastate it. The reason for this lies in the fact that the biochemical changes that take place in the body depend on its density, which is defined by the three basic types of energy – the forming energy (shen), the free flowing energy (qi), and the energy connecting the previous two (jing).

These energies can develop normally only if their circulation in the body is not distorted. And when the spine is not properly constructed, it is impossible to have normal circulation of the energies.

The spine complex is basic technique used for preparation for internal work. It allows the practitioner to be aware of the internal energy processes in the body and, upon deeper level of work, to begin to control and regulate them.

By preparing the spine, we at the same time determine the development of the energy through:

  • proper work with the body;
  • movement;
  • nurturing of the spine.

By knowing the spine, we come to know movement. By knowing movement, we can orient energy. When we can regulate the energy, we have conditions to interconnect it – which is the first step towards transformation. And it is when transformation begins, that we enter the real practice.

Working with the spine, we perform a therapy, which helps not only to improve the work of the spine, but also to create conditions for more qualitative existence of the body and, with time, to deepen our internal development.

The complex for opening of the spine consists of three sequences. The first one is directed towards realization of the rhythm of circulation of the spine fluid between the sacrum and the head. It is also used as preparation for work with the Minor cosmic orbit, since the circulation between the sacrum and the head plays a key role in the opening of the Minor cosmic orbit. This circulation determines the energy exchange among the different vessels of the body.

As most of the Daoist practices, the complex consists of four parts, directed towards opening of the body, activation of energy circulation, filling of the body and energy assimilation or, in other words, stabilizing the results of the work.

Basic characteristic of the spine practice is the lying position in which it is performed. This helps to influence the work of the whole area of the spine, thus minimizing the physical effort. This is important for the opening of all of the five sections of the spine and also allows to improve the work of the more fragile tissues of the muscles and the tendons. It also facilitates the nurturing of the bone tissues of the spine.
